Murphy, from Cornell, served in the Army with Company F, 129th Infantry, 33rd Division, 65th Infantry Brigade during World War I. He fought in the Somme Offensive (Albert Sector), Verdun Hill 304, Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Dannevoux-Gercourt, and Boise de Chaume. He also served in the occupation of Ettelbruck, Luxembourg.
