sgt robert a. Pulaski

biography

Bob, from Ladysmith, WI, served in the Army with Delta Company, 1/327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). He was killed in action on August 3rd, 1971 at Firebase Kim Qui, Thua Thien Province in what was then the Republic of South Vietnam.

In the words of Dave Estes. "Bob was a consummate soldier who became my friend during our tour in Vietnam. I was assistant gunner and Bob was our squad's machine gunner, so we became as close as brothers. We would often talk late at night in the jungle about going home and our plans after the Army. With less than a month before returning to the U.S., Bob was killed near a hilltop artillery base. He was 20 years old. I have been fortunate to meet some of his family members. We have created a scholarship in his name at his high school in Northern Wisconsin.

Bob is now a soaring "Screaming Eagle" of the 101st Airborne Division, and like the motto of our unit is now "Above the Rest".

From A Life in a Year by James R. Ebert:

"Bob Pulaski was dead on arrival at the hospital...it was hard to let go, harder than words could express, yet they were gone and life in the field continued. The dead and the wounded rotated home, part of the strange migration of souls that marked the beginning and endings of loves and tours and friendships. But the planes that carried the aluminum caskets back to America had not come to Vietnam empty. The one-year cycle of lives continued uninterrupted on the grand scale...In a matter of hours the news would travel westward, followed in a few days' time by the remains. But for those soldiers there would be no DEROS, and no joy in the homecoming."
