Gene, from Fairbury, IL, served on various ships during his time in the Navy. Although he entered the Navy too late to have seen any fighting, he was aboard the USS San Marcos when it was assigned to Joint Task Force 1 for Operation Crossroads, which was the series of atomic tests scheduled for Bikini Atoll during the summer of 1946.
