S/SGT Jacob M. Peter
biography
Peter, from Fairbury, IL, served in the Army as a part of Company B, 385th Infantry, 76th Infantry Division during World War II and was killed in action on March 8th, 1945. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, our nation's second highest decoration. Cut off and encircled by the enemy, he repelled repeated enemy counterattacks for seven hours. SSGT Peter continually exposed himself to enemy fire, and on one occasion, braved withering fire to drag a wounded comrade to safety. SSGT Peter was killed while driving off an enemy tank with rifle and grenade fire. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and devotion to duty at the cost of his life reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and our nation.
