John, from Pontiac, IL, served in the Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945 with the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division.

"I fought in the Anzio invasion and served as a radioman for Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated soldiers in U.S. Military History. I was with Audie Murphy when he earned the Medal of Honor."
