T/SGT Harold N. Shank

biography

Harold, of Cornell, IL, served in the Army Air Corps with the 305th Bomb Group, 365th Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force. He was the flight engineer and top turret gunner on a B-17F 42-5155 aircraft. Harold and his crew were shot down by German fighters over Germany on May 19th, 1943 during a mission to bomb targets at Kiel, Germany. The aircraft crashed near Husum, Germany. Harold was 20 years old. Only Harold, radio operator Bradley Gardner and tail gunner Vince Barron were killed, all others in the crew were taken as POWs. Harold is buried at the Ardennes American Military Cemetery near Neupre, Belgium.
